Norene Coller has a B.A. from Mount Holyoke College with a major in Zoology and a M. A. from the New York State University at New Paltz in Biology with a research thesis in bird behavior. She has completed additional graduate work in earth sciences and education. She has taught science and math in private schools in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and has taught biology and earth sciences in the Hyde Park Central School District in Dutchess County. In addition, she was a consultant for Dutchess County Board of Educational Services developing training for middle school teachers as state standards changed.
Norene Coller places Vassar science and math majors in internships in local public schools to complete a collaborative semester with an experienced science or math teacher. The mentor relationship allows the Vassar student to take part in a class and develop one or more projects to allow public school students to experience excellent science and math activities, with an emphasis on developing critical thinking. The majority of interns are placed in the City of Poughkeepsie Central Schools at the elementary, middle or high school levels where educational needs are great.
